Here at Five Bags of Gold, we are all about using your money wisely, which is why I created this Consumer Cellular Review.
One of the ways I keep my cell phone bill costs down is by using Consumer Cellular.
I’ve been a customer of the company for more than a decade and have saved thousands of dollars over that time from what I would have paid with a more popular provider.
This Consumer Cellular review will cover everything you need to know about the company and its products.
Where is Consumer Cellular Located?
I personally have conducted business with Consumer Cellular entirely online and over the phone, however, if you prefer doing business in person, you can find them in just about any Target store.
They are also set-up inside a few private retailers as well.
Use the company’s Store Locator to find a branch near you.
How is Consumer Cellular Service Rated?
I’m happy to report that I’ve never had an issue with Consumer Cellular’s service and I’ve used my phone on cruise ships when out of the country.
My daughter is on my plan and has called me from both Ecuador and the Dominican Republic when on mission’s trips without issue.
The company has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since November of 1999 and currently has an A+ rating at the time of writing this review.
The renowned J.D. Power has named Consumer Cellular as “#1 in Customer Service an astounding 11 times!
PC Mag has awarded Consumer Cellular with their Reader’s Choice Award eight times, including 2021!
Consumer Cellular Cell Phone: What’s Available
You may thing if you go with Consumer Cellular that you’ll be stuck using an outdated phone, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
You can bring your own phone if you wish, or purchase one right from the company, which is what I did. Here are the available phones at the time or writing this:
- iPhone 13; 13 Pro; 13 Pro Max, 13 Mini
- Avid 579
- Moto G Stylus; Moto G Play
- One AG Ace
- iPhone SE
- ZMax 10
- Galaxy A12
- Galaxy S20FE
- Galaxy Z Flip3
- Galaxy Z Fold3
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 12
- Link II
You have the option of paying for the Consumer Cellular cell phone in full, or via monthly payments.
Monthly payments range between $2 and $74, depending on the type of phone you purchase.
These options making owning a cell phone affordable for all.
Consumer Cellular Coverage
Did you know that Consumer Cellular uses two of the most popular networks? Since the company uses both AT&T and T-Mobile, customers enjoy coverage nationwide.

Consumer Cellular Service Plans
Let’s talk service plans, as you can obtain a phone anywhere and bring it with you if you don’t wish to purchase a phone directly from the company.
Unlimited talk and text are included in all of Consumer Cellular’s service plans, so you’re basically choosing a plan that has the amount of data you think you’ll need over the course of a month.
At the time of writing this article, options include:
- 1GB of data for $20 per month
- 3GB of data for $25 per month
- 7GB of data for $35 per month
- 10GB of data for $40 per month
- 15GB of data for $45 per month
- Unlimited data for $55 per month
Now, if you don’t need to use data at all, you can get a plan for just $15 per month. It comes with Unlimited Talk and Premium Nationwide Coverage.
This is a great choice for seniors or anyone who simply needs to carry a cell phone to call for help when an emergency arises.
Families that wish to add lines to their plan will find that each additional line is just $15 per month. That makes it super affordable for families with multiple teenagers.
Now, it is important to note that data will will split between all of the lines.
This isn’t a problem if you have unlimited, but it may be an issue if you’re trying to stay under a certain data limit.
For myself, I have the unlimited data plan and one additional line (my daughter).
Now for my daughter’s line I pay just $10 per month (well she reimburses me for her portion) because we signed up over a decade ago.
Let’s Talk Fees
I have my Consumer Cellular cell phone bill in front of me. I paid a total of $7 in taxes and fees.
Now two of these fees are NJ based (the state where I live), so you may have different fees based on your state.
Additionally, I’m paying a little sales tax for the phone I purchased on a payment plan, so if you brought your own phone, you won’t even have this sales tax on your bill.
AARP Discounts
Consumer Cellular is most known for being one of the best options for seniors.
Not only are their plans more affordable, but they also provide a 5% discount on each and every monthly service bill for anyone who has an AARP Membership.
My parents have taken advantage of this in the past, but I’m still waiting to become old enough to join.

Consumer Cellular Review
In conclusion, it’s always a good idea to check out reviews from customers who have experience with a company before you make a final decision.
I can only speak from my experience and that of my daughter who has been on my plan since she was old enough to have a cell phone (she’s 22 and married now, but still on my plan lol).
If you’re looking to save money on your cell phone bill, but want to stick with a company who uses reliable networks for excellent coverage, then Consumer Cellular is an excellent option.
Another HUGE plus is that you are never locked into a contract with Consumer Cellular, which means if you give the company a try and find it’s not for you, you can cancel at any time without penalty.
I have personally contacted the company’s customer service team on at least 5 occasions.
Each time the representative was kind, courteous and able to resolve my issues, which involved setting up the phone as I’m not tech savvy.
In all honesty, I don’t remember how long I waited before a rep was available.
I know that can be an issue with some companies, but I know I always got through and had a positive experience.
When you switch to Consumer Cellular through out link, you’ll get a $10 credit! So go ahead and give them a try!
